The shelter estimated Mystic was seven months old when we adopted her.

I’ve struggled now for over a week, and I just don’t know how to break the news. Four days after Jazz died last week, Mystic died, too.

An adult, here, Mystic shows how well her beautiful fur grew out!

It was quite unexpected, and the veterinarian could not explain how she got the illness that was too much for her. The diagnosis was clear, but for a young, otherwise healthy cat to get it was quite unexpected. It has all been just too much for me to be able to talk about it.

During our last camping trip, Nami and Mystic supervise fueling the truck from inside the cab.

For the first few days, Nami wandered the house, calling for Mystic, returning to the place where her scent was strongest as if she hoped to find her there.

Whether a kitten or an adult, Mystic loved to lounge in the bathroom sink.

I think she is finally resigned to having to soldier on without her friend and partner in crime. Mystic did so much to rejuvenate Nami, and it was so sweet to see their friendship, that it is even more painful now to see Nami alone.

This is my favorite Mystic photo. As a kitten, she explored our jade plant sitting in the window.

Beautiful as Mystic was, her purr was her finest attribute. It was strong and seemed to heal those who heard and felt it. She was such an integral part of our family that her sudden loss has been difficult to handle. Paired with the loss of Jazz, it has been a struggle.

This is the bag I usually carry to work. Mystic wanted to come along!

I am so grateful to the cat, dogs, and birds that remain here, as they are quite a comfort me.

During a rest stop during our last trip, Mystic sniffs the breeze and looks at the scenery. She didn’t even want to jump out – she just wanted to see what was there.

  1. This very same thing happened to my cats. One was sick with a long illness and when she died, the perfectly healthy cat stopped eating and died nine days later. I was heartbroken. Good luck getting through it. It’s so hard to lose one pet, but two is almost unbearable. xo

  2. Karel, wonderful that you have so many friends to extend sympathy. That must help a lot. I did send contributions for both pets to the Wildlife organization. It is always so sad to lose a loved pet and who ever heard of an unloved pet! They are all loved.
I do believe there is a wonderful afterlife for our pets. They won’t be unloved and lonesome where their spirits have gone. I am sure Jazz is looking after Mytic. They may be laughing together about all the funny things that happened during their life on earth and in your home. Remember the smiles.

  4. I am so, so sorry. We have lost many fluffy friends over the years, and each one leaves a hole in my heart. Take your time. Mourn. Sending love and light, my friend.

  5. I couldn’t read your whole blog… It’s gut wrenching to lose a friend and family member. Honestly, my sister-in-law passed last week also and I think it’s not as painful as losing a pet-friend. It’s not that I didn’t love her, I did. When an animal loves you, it is unconditional and without boundaries. It leaves a hole. A big Hole.

I know how deeply you love your animal family, I am sorry for this pain you are facing. Sending you warm hugs of love and reassurance.

    1. Oh, Gin! I’m sorry to hear of your family’s loss. And yes, big holes. I’m sorry to bring such sad news. I wanted to be more up-beat and just couldn’t find a way. Thanks for the hug, while you’re hugging me, I’m hugging you!

    1. I’m sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace.
I don’t know if it’d be a comfort but many of us Asians believe that animals especially cats can see spirits, so maybe she’ll be the guardian angel and Nami wouldn’t feel lonely. At least I hope so.

      1. That’s nice to think and when I was at my old place I used to feel my cat, Miley was there at times and I would like to think she was watching me while I was there, like she did.
I had her put to sleep at home, after my final precious week with her. She was full of cancer. Miley always liked to be near me and she wanted even more in her final hours.
Miley is at peace now, but because of the extent of her cancer she was suffering I think even more than what she shown. Miley was a brave girl. Xx
