Goffin's Cockatoo

Alpha Male

Goffin's cockatoo
Sugar is perching on out natural aspen cat tree that extends from the first floor to the second-floor loft. Here, he’s on one of the wooden cradles in place for the cats, watching me.

Sugar is now the alpha male of our blended flock/pack. Most of our pets are female, but two of the parrots are male. Of course, Sugar thinks he has ruled the roost for years, and he is relieved that we finally recognize his dominance. He is quite the character!

Here’s Sugar with his crest up, which means he’s a bit excited.

Sugar is a Goffin’s Cockatoo, which is on the small side of the large parrots. His beak is sharp and so is his attitude; cats give him a wide berth. We estimate his age to be close to 40 so I can see why he thinks he should be in charge of all the pets.

Sugar loves the second-floor windows, watching the trees and other birds. It is so different than the jungle I’m sure he lives in as a wild bird many years ago before he was caught and brought to the USA. I’m so glad that was banned in the 70’s.

Sugar spends the most time on my shoulder but will also perch on my husband’s and some of our children’s shoulders. He used to spend all his time with me but has loosened up the past few years,  which is a bit of a relief. During mating season, if Sugar’s on my shoulder, my husband has to be careful to approach from the other side if he kisses me. It’s clear that Sugar has staked me out as his territory, and he may not be willing to share.

When Sugar gets excited, his crest goes up!

He’s a bit of a Romeo, also treating Hannah like his mate. She has other ideas, though, and gives him the talon to push him away. Nonetheless, they seem to enjoy flocking together during certain times of the day.

dog and parrot
River watches Sugar with rapt attention!

The dogs seem to worship Sugar, as he loves to swipe food from my plate and then drop it to the dogs. River is totally entranced by Sugar, seeing him as both a flying toy and a food-provider. Sugar needs to watch himself, or he’ll find himself in River’s mouth if he’s not careful. She loves to try to catch Sugar when he flies over her. Sugar likes to tease the dogs, happy for the playmates. It’s not to smart if you ask me, but things always seem to work out for him.

Sugar loves to sit on my computer monitor, eyeing my work as if he is co-captain of the computer!

    1. I got Sugar from a rescue organization. After years of neglect and possible abuse, he was relinquished by his previous owner. He was so depressed when I first got him. It took several years for his personality to bloom again, and it’s a joy to see him happy and cocky now!

    1. Sugar loves to play with the dogs, but he leaves the cats alone; I think he’s afraid of them! Or at least he has respect for the fangs and claws. Parrots can live to be around 100 years old! We know only a little of Sugar’s history, as he is a rescue.

  3. Your pictures were great. As always I enjoy hearing about the family pets. I just imagine Sugar would be a good protector if he perceived you were being attacked. You will never have an empty nest no matter how old you grow!
