When life hands you lemons, make…beer! #WATWB

WATWIC-Bright-TuqBlk

When life hands you lemons, make…beer! Well, you make beer if life really handed you bruised peaches. There’s a wonderful program that takes unsellable, bruised fruit that was going to be thrown away and helps it be used. As part of the Plate of the Union campaign, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has an initiative to bring attention to food waste, estimated to be 40% of the U.S. food industry. In a move to focus attention on an often overlooked issue, EWG partnered with a craft brewery to add “rescue” bruised stone fruit during the beer fermentation process to give it a fruity flavor. Bringing the issue of food waste to the public eye, EWG is hoping to inspire more participation in food-waste reduction activities. Here’s a toast to Ugly and Stoned beer. May it make its way in the world to inspire far-reaching change to feed the planet!

  1. Hiya .. it’s great to know that they are utilising the peaches … we are doing that here with left over bread – and other foods … that will get used and utilised by many who need the extra supplements … cheers Hilary

  2. Good grief. It’s amazing what our culture throws away. That said, it’s great to see someone using tossed fruit that’s determined to be “not good enough”, especially since they’re making beer with it. Two birds, one stone!

  3. Food waste at 40% is an astonishing and utterly unacceptable number. How wonderful to have programs addressing this issue, and hooray for all the inventive ways to make a difference. Love the idea of brewing beer from stone fruit – and bet it taste great as well.
